A Interdisciplinary Artist, Designer and Artisan Maker.
Context
Idea Summary
I've found the process of this project different to my usual routine. From the begging I got stuck into research.
I investigated my local area.
I approached my local archives.
I got reading on subjects that interested me.
The idea came to me very early on. On my nightly walk, I was going to track it. As well as tracking my daily walks, I was going to write a diary entry about how I felt and what I saw during these walks.
Progression
I developed this idea pretty quickly. Archival research influenced this. Based on the house I now lived in, I began discovering some interesting stories. I started looking at the house. I studied the way it was built and the features I loved about it. It was the windows that caught my attention. I noticed that I enjoyed gazing out of the large third story window. It was nice to watch people's lives go by. My next step was to look at ghost stories within the area.
My sketchbook notes, that I became fascinated with Bella and the Wych Elm. It seems that I was only interested in the history due to the story.
It all became clear to me.
I enjoyed watching, I enjoyed reading and hearing stories.
Final Ideas
This idea led me to discover the films "Rear Window" and "Disturbia". They opened up a number of ideas. Window watching was one of them. Other ideas included stacking windows and Voyeurism ethics.
My concept must be understood within my final piece.
The stack of windows represents the tight-knit neighbourhood we all now live in and that privacy is a thing of the past. The blacked out windows on the second layer are meant to represent the reflections we see while window watching in the evening. My piece is aimed at enticing my audience at face value. This will hopefully entice the audience to peek through the windows and look inside. I hope they feel uneasy when they observe their own reflections.
Contributing to this will be the reaction of the audience. It will be interesting to watch the audience respond to the work and add to the concept of voyeurism.
